1st Open Call Winner Interview: ALADIN-X by PowerEmp

COP-PILOT 1st Open Call winner: ALADIN-X, interview with PowerEmp

PowerEmp, SRL (Italy) is one of the 8 winners of the COP-PILOT 1st Open Call. Their project, ALADIN-X (ALADIN-X: Edge-Intelligent Power Quality Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance Platform for RES-Rich Distribution Grids), is part of Cluster 3E (Energy). We asked the team about their company, the challenge they address and the impact they expect.

Could you briefly introduce your company and describe its main activities?

PowerEmp is an Italian technology company developing intelligent solutions for electrical energy monitoring and Power Quality analysis. We combine expertise in electrical engineering, embedded systems, and cloud software to turn measurement data into actionable information. Our ALADIN monitoring devices and Energy Hub cloud platform help businesses understand energy consumption, investigate electrical disturbances, and improve operational performance. Through applied research and product development, we are expanding our solutions towards advanced diagnostics, Edge AI, and interoperable digital services for increasingly complex electrical infrastructures.

What challenge are you addressing under the COP-PILOT Horizon’s first Open Call, and how is your proposal relevant to the challenge?

ALADIN-X addresses the need for reliable, intelligent, and interoperable monitoring of increasingly complex electrical networks. Distributed generation, energy storage, electric vehicle charging and power electronics introduce dynamic operating conditions and Power Quality disturbances that conventional monitoring approaches may struggle to capture and interpret. Dependence on continuous cloud connectivity can also limit timely analysis and data availability.

Within COP-PILOT’s first Open Call, ALADIN-X will evolve PowerEmp’s existing ALADIN technology into an advanced platform combining enhanced electrical measurements, local processing, AI capabilities, and cloud integration. The project will develop higher-resolution event detection, an embedded architecture with AI acceleration, robust local data logging and recovery mechanisms, and expanded connectivity and industrial interfaces.

By bringing more processing directly to the device, ALADIN-X aims to support faster event identification while preserving measurement data during connectivity interruptions. Standardised interfaces will facilitate integration with external platforms and the COP-PILOT ecosystem.

PowerEmp will lead the project, system architecture, firmware, embedded software, data processing and cloud integration. X-Phase will contribute electronic design, hardware engineering, prototyping and industrialisation, while Energia Europa will support testing and field validation. This partnership connects technological development with manufacturing requirements and practical operating needs.

What is the expected impact of your proposal?

ALADIN-X is expected to improve the visibility, reliability, and diagnostic capabilities of electrical monitoring, helping users move from collecting measurements to understanding disturbances and their operational consequences.

For industrial and energy users, enhanced event detection and local processing will support earlier identification and investigation of Power Quality issues. This can enable better-informed maintenance and mitigation decisions, helping reduce the risk of equipment malfunction, operational disruption, and avoidable downtime.

At the technological level, the project will strengthen PowerEmp’s monitoring platform through increased acquisition and computing capabilities, AI acceleration, resilient local data management and improved interoperability. Local processing and buffering are expected to reduce dependence on continuous connectivity and preserve valuable event data for subsequent analysis.

At the ecosystem level, integration and validation within COP-PILOT will demonstrate how an intelligent measurement device can contribute to connected energy services and collaborative digital infrastructures. Field testing with Energia Europa and hardware development with X-Phase will help assess practical usability, technical robustness and readiness for industrialisation.

For PowerEmp and its partners, the project will establish a foundation for new products and services in Power Quality Intelligence, supporting future commercial deployment and further innovation. More broadly, ALADIN-X aims to contribute to more observable and resilient electrical infrastructures as electrification and distributed energy resources continue to grow.
