Panel discussion at PORTCOMMS 2026, The Wireless Networks in Ports Conference, London

Cluster 2 Represented COP-PILOT at the PORTCOMMS Conference in London (UK)

Jose Miguel Higon from Fundación Valenciaport participated as a speaker at PORTCOMMS 2026, presenting “Beyond 5G Use Cases in the Port of Valencia” as part of the COP-PILOT Horizon project Cluster 2. The presentation highlighted how advanced connectivity technologies can be translated into practical operational value within the port environment.

The session showcased the integration of private 5G infrastructure, cloud-native deployments, automated network slice lifecycle management, and real-time maritime data pipelines. These technologies are being brought together to enable port-related use cases to be delivered as on-demand services, supporting more flexible, efficient, and digitally connected port operations.

In addition to the presentation, Jose Miguel took part in a panel discussion addressing the challenges of integrating innovative connectivity solutions into terminals and the wider port cluster. Discussions highlighted the importance of aligning the needs of terminal operators, the port authority, service providers, and other stakeholders to ensure successful implementation. Participants also emphasised that use cases should be driven by operational requirements rather than network capabilities alone, while interoperability and open data models remain essential for scaling solutions beyond pilot projects.

The discussion further underlined the importance of establishing clear business models, service-level agreements (SLAs), and operational ownership to support the transition from pilot deployments to production. Ensuring coexistence with legacy systems and existing terminal networks was also identified as a key consideration from the early stages of deployment.

The participation provided an opportunity to present the progress of COP-PILOT Horizon, exchange insights with industry stakeholders, and contribute to discussions on the role of advanced 5G connectivity in enabling practical, scalable, and service-oriented digital solutions for ports.
