SUMMARY:2026 Annual EurOMA Conference
DESCRIPTION:Presenting “Bridging the Gap Between Technical Validation and Societal Impact: Evidence from the Large-scale Edge Computing Piloting Project” \nKUL/UBRAD will present COP-PILOT Horizon at the annual conference of EurOMA. KUL/UBRAD participates in the project as an impact assessment partner\, with responsibility for measuring the project’s societal\, business\, and sustainability dimensions across its four industrial clusters. Working alongside 46 consortium partners spanning energy\, smart cities\, agriculture\, and manufacturing\, the team’s mandate is to ensure that the value generated by edge-to-cloud deployments is captured not only in technical terms but across the broader economic\, environmental\, and social outcomes that matter to stakeholders and policymakers alike. \nThe team’s primary activity has been the design and operationalisation of an integrated KPI–KVI (Key Performance Indicators – Key Value Indicators) evaluation framework. This required an initial requirements-engineering phase in which the needs of heterogeneous stakeholders – technology providers\, industrial end-users\, public authorities\, and citizen-facing intermediaries – were systematically extracted and reconciled. The resulting framework organises assessment across three interlinked layers: technical performance\, operational and ecosystem value\, and societal and sustainability impact\, with a cross-cutting governance and learning dimension. \nThe work has already demonstrated that making societal and ecosystem value explicitly measurable through KVIs placed on equal footing with technical KPIs\, is a powerful enabler for turning promising edge computing demonstrations into durable\, large-scale deployments. Early evidence across the clusters points to meaningful gains in operational efficiency\, carbon footprint reduction\, and public service quality\, confirming that orchestrated edge-to-cloud solutions can deliver substantial value well beyond their technical performance.

SUMMARY:Code the Continuum Hackathon
DESCRIPTION:COP-PILOT Horizon\, together with the Eclipse Foundation\, CEI-Sphere\, and O-CEI Horizon\, will co-organize the Code the Continuum Hackathon\, taking place on 30 June–1 July 2026 at the University of Cagliari. \nThe event will bring together students\, developers\, researchers\, innovators\, and open-source communities to collaborate on practical challenges across the cloud–edge–IoT continuum. Participants will engage in hands-on activities linked to key domains such as energy\, mobility\, and industry\, working with real use cases and pilot environments. \nParticipants can choose between three hands-on challenge tracks: \n\nCOP-PILOT: From Code to Continuum: Orchestrating Distributed Applications with OpenSlice\nThis challenge focuses on orchestrating distributed energy applications across simulated edge and cloud environments using OpenSlice and Kubernetes. Participants will onboard\, deploy\, and manage containerised services simulating an energy monitoring pipeline across the computing continuum.\nO-CEI: Eclipse Zenoh & Sustainable Edge-Cloud\nExplore how Eclipse Zenoh supports energy-aware edge-cloud applications by comparing cloud-only and edge-accelerated deployments\, reducing bandwidth usage and energy consumption across distributed systems.\nECLIPSE FOUNDATION: Jakarta EE\, AI & the Hourglass Model\nDesign and implement a Jakarta EE application using the Hourglass Model and external LLM integration to analyse enterprise domains through modern AI engineering and agentic techniques.\n\nCOP-PILOT will be represented by Cluster3E leader Eleftherios Mylonas from University of Patras. \nThe hackathon will provide a collaborative space for experimentation\, knowledge exchange\, and the exploration of open technologies\, interoperability\, and reusable solutions across large-scale pilots. It moves beyond traditional notions of digital inclusion to critically examine structural dynamics such as data representation\, access asymmetries\, and the societal implications of large-scale digital deployments. \nFrom a COP-PILOT perspective\, the track is directly aligned with the project’s vision of interoperable\, cross-domain platforms. SUMMARY:Europe-Korea Conference on Science and Technology (EKC2026): AI-Driven Future of Science and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Kingston University London (KUL)\, represented by Prof. Youngseok Choi\, has been invited to present the COP-PILOT Horizon Europe project at EKC2026 under the track “Science\, Technology\, Human Values and Socio-ecological Future in the Age of AI.” This invited presentation will serve as a dissemination activity to share emerging insights from COP-PILOT on how next-generation digital infrastructures\, including Edge computing\, IoT-enabled platforms\, and AI-supported orchestration\, can be evaluated not only through technical performance indicators but also through broader societal and human-centred value. \nThe presentation will focus on the theme of Inclusive Development\, reflecting COP-PILOT’s ambition to move beyond a narrow efficiency-driven view of digital innovation. While conventional evaluation often relies on Key Performance Indicators such as latency\, uptime\, throughput\, and system reliability\, COP-PILOT explores how digital platforms can also generate relational\, economic\, environmental\, and public value across diverse stakeholder ecosystems. This aligns with the project’s Key Value Indicator approach\, which links technical performance to wider outcomes such as stakeholder trust\, data liquidity\, socio-economic resilience\, SME participation\, sustainability\, and digital sovereignty. \nThe talk will discuss how large-scale European digital infrastructure projects can support inclusive socio-technical transformation across domains such as energy\, smart cities\, agriculture\, and manufacturing. The emphasis will be on how AI and digital platforms can be governed and assessed in ways that make social value visible\, ensuring that innovation benefits are not concentrated among dominant actors but are distributed across SMEs\, citizens\, public authorities\, and local communities. \nBy contributing to the EKC2026 discussion on science\, technology\, human values\, and socio-ecological futures\, this dissemination activity will position COP-PILOT as a practical example of how European research and innovation projects can address the challenge of building digital infrastructures that are technically robust\, socially legitimate\, environmentally responsible\, and inclusive by design.
